Unite Communities
The British Muslim community has historically experienced divisive calendar issues such as split Eid celebrations due to varying approaches to moon sighting. We work to bridge these divides.
Scientific Approach
Moon sighting is a psychophysical challenge where astronomy, atmospheric physics, and human perception intersect. We collect observational data to inform our calendar, supported by outreach partnerships with the Universities of Leeds and Cambridge.
Community Engagement
Our network of over 34 regional WhatsApp groups across the UK enables local communities to participate in moon sighting, share knowledge, and build connections through a shared practice.
The New Crescent Society was created with the specific mission of uniting the British Muslim community through standardised moon sighting practices that respect traditional values while embracing scientific understanding.
