About New Crescent Society
The New Crescent Society is a grassroots organisation dedicated to the accurate observation and verification of lunar sightings for Islamic calendar determination. Founded on principles of scientific rigour and community collaboration, we bring together observers, scholars, and technology to serve the British Muslim community.
Our Mission
To provide accurate, verified lunar sighting information through a combination of traditional observation methods and modern technology, supporting Muslim communities across the UK in their religious observances while maintaining the highest standards of astronomical accuracy and scholarly guidance.
NCS is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, with support from observers, scholars, and researchers across the British Isles.
Our movement was inspired by South Africa, where community moon sighting has long been established practice, and we continue to learn from moon-sighting communities around the world.
Our Founder
Imad Ahmed
Founder · PhD researcher, Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge
Imad founded the New Crescent Society to bring scientific rigour and community observation together in determining the Islamic calendar in the UK. His doctoral research at Cambridge examines why UK Muslims disagree on how the Islamic lunar calendar should be constructed, drawing on theology, Islamic law, astronomy and anthropology.
